Chinese merchants resident in the port all well realise the right course to be pursued and are all enthusiastic patriots. It was to the strenuous efforts of them, the Chinese residents here, that the Republic owed its establishment, and we hope that they will by no means fail to realise the good result of their undertaking, so as to complete their merit. Some time ago, our Canton Covernment, realising the burning patriotism of its subjects, and being un- -able to disregard the national danger which might be compared to a ton weight suspended by a single hair, laid the responsibility of raising a subsidy upon us and the members of our Society, and we accepted with all willingness and enthusiasm the responsibility of this important enterprise together with all our fellow-country- -men resident here. Formerly after the defeat of France by Prussia, France had to pay an intolerable sum as indemnity, but the French were so much ashamed of their defeat that they succeeded in one day's time in raising a sum that was more than enough to pay the indermity; again on the first establishment of the Independence of the United States, the Americans bore with patience and courage a great burden of misery as regards their livelihood and they are universally recognised as brave and patriotic. Think of the glorious patriotism of the people of these two nations. Now the United States is a powerful Republic in America, and France in Europe; thus why should not the Chinese Republic shine brilliantly in Aga in the Eastern Hemisphere ? Indeed this is the Responsibi- -lity of the people of our Republic. We call on you then the subjects of the Republic to aid with your contributions, otherwise our nation must be brought to utter ruin and the people remain under a curse, becoming slaves that have to serve others, as do dogs and horses, to our eternal disgrace. A proverb says "A nation that makes no effort in the world's race is very near to ruin", and again *Decayed skin can grow no hair". Accordingly we again

express our earnest hope that all our people will take into deliberate consideration the duty they owe to their country. More-

-over, on account of the many difficulties and obstacles in

connection with matters diplomatic and the constant troubles in
